本片是帕索里尼“生命三部曲”的第二部，取材于十四世纪英国诗人乔叟的同名诗体小说集。文学原著由23篇相对独立的故事组成，在题材、结构上都与《十日谈》有相似之处，同时又充满英国人特有的严谨不失幽默的味道。本片强调了性爱作为反抗宗教束缚、争取人性自由的武器。 幕后制作 影片与原著一样以众多独立的小故事构成，保留了原来故事的粗俗，但却丢失了原著的风趣和乐天精神，剩下的多半是导演的变态大展览，被认为是三部曲中最大胆露骨的一部。帕索里尼亲自扮演乔叟。本片是帕索里尼“生命三部曲”的中第二部，另外两部分别为《十日谈》和《一千零一夜》。影片荣获1972年第22届柏林国际电影节金熊奖。
